We offer our charts in two sizes: Large Format and Small Format
Large Format Charts:
Our large format charts the actual NOAA charts mounted in the USA by a family-owned workshop that uses the highest-quality Drytac laminates to ensure no glare. All mounted charts are UV protected and come ready to hang on the wall. Each chart is permanently bonded so it will not buckle, wrinkle or fade over time.
Better yet, our charts present a light-weight alternative to traditional glass frames and sell for a fraction of the price of more traditional framing methods.
Our Large Format Charts are offered in two mounting styles:
1) BOX MOUNT:
As its name suggests, box-mounting entails mounting the actual chart on a thin sheet of laminate that is then affixed to an underlying MDF box frame that measures approx 1 inch accross and 3/4" deep. This method creates a raised appearance where the chart extends out from the wall by about 3/4" (think of how a stretched canvas looks when hung on on the wall). The box frame is trimmed in black, so it creates a refined appearance that should suit both casual and formal decor. The edges of the frame also have a subtle beveled edge, ensuring a pleasing look to the eye.
Here's the catch: Because of the additional labor involved, box mounting is a more expensive option - typically running about 25%-30% more than our "Plaq (Flat) Mount option - please read on...
2) PLAQ (FLAT) MOUNT:
As a way to offer the charts more reasonably, we now offer what we refer to as Plaq or "Flat" Mounting. The plaq mounting process involves the same Drytac laminate as in the box mount, but is mounted on a thinner 1/4" sheet of MDF board. By eliminating the "box frame" behind the chart, we remove a significant amount of labor and materials, resulting in a savings of 25%-30% when compared to Box Mounting.
Like the Box Mount, the edges here are trimmed in black also and have a slight bevel - creating attractive sight lines. The major difference is that the chart now only extends outward from the wall by 1/4" as opposed to the 3/4" offered in the Box Mount style. Additionally, the Plaq Mount charts are slightly heavier than the box mount style, but not enough to create any difficulties in hanging.
While all actual NOAA charts vary in size, we crop so there is a 1’ white border all the way around. Finish sizes averages about 34” x 44”, although some charts (such as Narragansett Bay) are larger. You may view actual large format chart dimensions by clicking onto our Chart Dimensions Page.
Small Format Charts:
To accomodate smaller spaces, we offer small format charts which are reduced versions of the NOAA charts that measure approximately 14x18." Because the large format charts are intended for use in navigation, we must reduce these small format charts to a size where they are no longer practical for navigational purposes.
As such, it will be difficult to read actual depth measurements and smaller navigational notations on the small format charts. However, you can still clearly read all larger notations (harbors, bays, inlets, cities, towns, points of interest, etc). These are perfect for decorative use!
All small format charts are in the Plaq Mount style noted above. They come ready to hang and are lightweight and easy to fit anywhere you have some extra wall space. The small format charts also look handsome on shelves using an easel!
PLEASE NOTE: Our small format charts are produced using a clay-based printing process, which is different than the offset printing used by NOAA for the large format charts. As a result, if left in direct sunlight for an extended period of time, the small format charts will fade. Please try to hang the small format charts in areas that are not as prone to sunlight.
